Coming to that realization-let alone taking that crucial first step-can be a daunting endeavor. Sometimes you have to step back to move forward. India.Arie performed at the Music Center at Strathmore. He has a smooth R&B voice and sang such songs as “Lovely Day” and “Lean on Me.” His arrangement of “A Change is Gonna Come” left the audience moved. His Texan attitude and church vibes got the audience warmed up. Moore had the opportunity to open for India.Arie. Each one is a stellar musician in their own rite. This band supports India.Arie on the musical journey that is a songversation. Randolph also acts as their musical director. India.Arie is joined on stage by Gene Moore and Mayah Dyson on vocals, Kevin Randolph on keys, Charles LaMont Garner on drums and vocals, and Joel Cross on guitar. Her mom, who makes all of her costumes was in the wings and India.Arie got her on stage to help her sing one song.
The projections on stage help create a multisensory experience. She asks the audience to watch with their eyes, ears, and heart. She also performed such compelling songs as “Brown Skin,” “What If,” and “Steady Love.” India.Arie is an incredible musician and performer, able to connect with her audience on a deep level.
Her song “I am Light” is a summoning of the intrinsic value in each of us. Worthy is focused on celebrating the best of who we are in a “co-created sacred space.” She draws the audience in with call and response and they give all of their focused attention. Rather than a concert, she calls her performances a songversation and this songversation she is touring right now is called Worthy. Her work is spiritual and robust and focused on love.
